How to Calculate Sales Tax?

Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by state and local governments on the sale of goods and services. To calculate the final price of an item including sales tax, convert the tax percentage into a decimal and multiply it by the pre-tax price.

1. Calculating Sales Tax (Add Tax):
Tax Amount = Pre-Tax Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100)
Total Price = Pre-Tax Price + Tax Amount

2. Reverse Sales Tax Formula (Extracting Tax from Total):
Pre-Tax Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + (Tax Rate ÷ 100))
Tax Amount = Total Price − Pre-Tax Price

For example, if you purchase an item priced at $200.00 with a state sales tax rate of 8.25%:

  • Tax Amount: $200.00 × 0.0825 = $16.50
  • Total Price Paid: $200.00 + $16.50 = $216.50

States with No Sales Tax (The "NOMAD" States)

In the United States, 5 states do not impose a general statewide sales tax:

  • Alaska (AK): No statewide tax, though local municipalities can levy local sales taxes (avg. 1.82%).
  • Delaware (DE): 0.0% statewide and local sales tax.
  • Montana (MT): 0.0% statewide sales tax.
  • New Hampshire (NH): 0.0% statewide sales tax.
  • Oregon (OR): 0.0% statewide and local sales tax.

Highest Average Combined Sales Tax Rates by State (2024)

Because many cities, counties, and special districts add local taxes on top of the state rate, combined sales taxes can vary significantly. Here are some of the highest average rates in the US:

💡 Tax Tip for Online Sellers: Following the landmark 2018 Supreme Court case South Dakota v. Wayfair, e-commerce sellers and remote businesses are required to collect sales tax in states where they meet economic nexus thresholds (typically $100,000 in gross revenue or 200 transactions annually).

International Differences: Sales Tax vs. VAT vs. GST

  • United States (Sales Tax): Charged only at the final point of retail purchase. Tax is added on top of shelf prices at checkout.
  • United Kingdom & Europe (VAT): Value Added Tax is collected at every stage of the supply chain. Shelf prices in the UK (20% standard VAT) already include the tax by law.
  • Canada (GST / PST / HST): A combination of federal Goods and Services Tax (5%) and Provincial Sales Taxes (e.g. Ontario HST is 13%).
  • Australia (GST): A flat 10% Goods and Services Tax applied to most goods and services and included in consumer retail price tags.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide your total receipt amount by (1 + Tax Rate as a decimal). For example, if your total is $108.00 and the tax rate was 8% (0.08), divide $108.00 by 1.08 to find the original pre-tax price of $100.00.

Because the US has more than 11,000 distinct tax jurisdictions with differing city, county, and state rates, manufacturers and retailers cannot easily print uniform price tags that include local tax rates nationwide.

In most US states, unprepared grocery food items and prescription medications are exempt from sales tax or taxed at a significantly reduced rate. Prepared meals at restaurants are almost universally taxed at the standard rate.

Sales tax is collected by the seller inside the state where the transaction takes place. Use tax is owed directly by the buyer when they purchase an item out of state (or online without paying sales tax) and bring it into their home state for use.
